A Beautiful Start To Great Tasting Salt

Secret Sun® Sea Salts are harvested from the Laguna Ojo de Liebre, a beautiful and tranquil lagoon in Baja California Sur, Mexico on the Pacific coast.

Laguna Ojo de Liebre is one of two coastal lagoons comprising the El Vizcaino Whale Sanctuary and Biosphere Reserve. The high concentration of salt in the lagoon’s water makes it the perfect place for a natural salt harvesting operation and a welcomed refuge for North Pacific Gray Whales.

These once endangered whales visit the lagoon from November to April where they mate and spawn in safety. A visitor to Laguna Ojo de Liebre during this time will often be able to see huge tails arching up from the water and the telltale water spouts. It’s not uncommon to see mother whales doting on their new calves.

Laguna Ojo de Liebre was inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List in 1993. It is also home to many other marine mammals, marine turtles, and many migratory bird species.

The salt harvesting operations of Secret Sun Sea Salts work in harmony with the lagoon. Our high purity salt harvesting process is completely natural, with the residual brines returning back into the ocean so that the ecosystem remains in balance.

We care very deeply about Laguna Ojo de Liebre and its important place in the life cycles of so many animals. We are committed to protecting this resource to maintain the purity and integrity of our salt products, and also to save this jewel for future generations.
